A “Thinnovation” from Apple: MacBook Air
This is probably not a news too new (in fact, MacBook Air has been out since end of January), but I feel like sharing it to you.
My friends and I were having a chat in a restaurant on a dinner and they started talking about MacBook Air. I was ashamed as I’ve never heard about it before and I dare to call myself a Technology Blogger!
I made excuses that I’m not a fond of Apple, especially its computer system. To me, a computer system has to be able to play games and certainly Apple is not focusing on that area.
So then, I started to do some research and readings on MacBook Air.
MacBook Air is ultra thin and very portable due to its size.
Height: 0.16-0.76 inch (0.4-1.94 cm)- Width: 12.8 inches (32.5 cm)
It only weighs 3.0 pounds (1.36 kg)! There is no excuse not to bring this little one around now, isn’t there?
MacBook Air has a 13.3-inch Widescreen display and a full-size keyboard. Its processor is a 1.6GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 2GB built-in 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM. It also has a built-in bluetooth and WiFi.
Apart from these amazing features, however, there are a few reasons why you should not get this product:
- The battery is sealed in. So you can’t carry a spare battery in case you are out of power and there is no power outlet nearby. You have to go to a dealer to replace it with a new one.
- No built-in DVD drive. So I guess it is not made for you to watch DVD movies on it.
- Only have 1 USB slot. Huh? I know they must save space, but only 1? Assuming that you are going to use a mouse on this thing, what happens when you want to plug other hardware in? Easy. Take out your mouse and plug the hardware in. Done with it? Re-plug back your mouse lol. A solution is of course, to bring a USB Hub around.
- Built in Wi-Fi. Period. You MUST use Wi-Fi to connect, because MacBook Air doesn’t have an Ethernet jack for the network cable.
In my opinion, MacBook Air is released too early (in terms of technology advancement). Because at the moment, we do need Ethernet connection, we still need a DVD ROM drive!
However, these are compensated with its super thin size. It’s true that having an Ethernet jack, more USB slots, and a DVD-ROM will add more dimensions to it.

I switched to a MAC last year after being a PC person for 25 years. Was it a great Switch? I think so without a doubt. I have become a person that I used to hate. A Mac Fanboy.
Now on the subject of the New Mac Laptop, at this point, I agree with everything that you said as far as it’s short comings. I see it as a computer that would be cool to visit Internet coffee shops with and maybe blogging on the road.
Other than that, No DVD drive…. not for me.

I’m not an Apple fan, but I did like the look of this one. However the shortcomings you mention probably make it not worthwhile to use. I think I’ll wait for something else to come along of similar size but more functional.
