Great successor and reason to "upgrade" June 26, 2007 R. Griewel (Germany) 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
I've been a regular player (not extensive, maybe 5 hours/week) of Battlefield 2. I enjoyed the game a lot but with very dominant air superiority, bad auto balancing and the recent announcement of EA not to release any patches anymore I lost my interested.
Looking at Battlefield 2142 I thought, I give it a try and I have to say I am not dissapointed, on the contrary! The game hast all the fun from the original Battlefield series PLUS cool additions.
Here are the things I presonally think EA has improved:
- The Weapon upgrade mode is better, you can upgrade additional items more often andnot only new wapons
- the map display looks better
- the vehicles and terrain looks better
- the titan mode, where you have to hold as many "flags" as possible to destroy the enemies base but also can attack that base directly is a lot of fun
- it seems that people play more as teams online - even without knowing each other...
All in all - well done EA. Too bad that you sell the addon Northern Strike instead of giving it out for free as a patch...
AWESOME! February 20, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This game rocks, you get to control robots, high-tech space ship things, there are the really HUGE tanks you get to drive around in, there is much cooler and more high-tech jeeps, and the weapons are abosolutly AWESOME. I HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend this game if you like "Battlefield" games and high-tech stuff.
Excellent FPS!! August 9, 2007 Garry Adams (Cedar City, UT) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
What can I say... Battlefield, next generation. It's awesome. (If your machine can handle it.) I actually upgraded my entire computer, mostly so I could play BF2142. My old Athlon XP 3200+ / Radeon 9600 128mb card / 1GB DDR 400 could play it, but there was some bad lag, even on lowest settings. (Now I'm running Athlon X2 5600+ Radeon 2900XT 2X1GB DDR-II 800, etc...) The tactical options are great. Weapons rock, and vehicles are totally cool. The only downside is that you have to play online to earn upgrades. (not that playing online is a downside, online multiplay is SO much better than AI bots... but it would be nice to be able to earn upgrades in single player mode offline.) The original release was buggy, but with patches, this game runs flawlessly, even on Vista Ultimate. Two words, BUY IT!!!.
A masterpiece, never mind the negative reviews January 21, 2008 Benjamin R. Greene (Bakersfield, CA USA) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I have spent several thousand hours playing this game. It is very well balanced, and endlessly challenging.
I once heard a scholar say that the Bible has wading pools for lambs to play in, and oceans so deep that whales could drown. He meant that the Bible's stories can be simple enough to entertain pre-schoolers, and complex enough to challenge the greatest minds.
In the same way, BF2142 can be entertaining your first game, and 1000 games later. Just shooting at people on your first battle is fun, and you can spend a lifetime trying to master all the complexities of the game. It features four classes, several vehicles, and two types of missions. And with multiplayer, each opponent is challenging in a way that artificial intelligence can never fully mimic.
The vast majority of the negative reviews on this site concentrate on the issues of "adware" and "spyware", which are perfectly valid concerns, but in this game are unwarranted. So what if the billboards in the game occaisionally say "Intel" on them? And if EA meant to install spyware, they apparently changed their mind or failed, because I have played this game for several hours a day for more than a year, and I have never had a problem or noticed anything. I'm sorry, but the rightous indignation over these issues will have to wait for another game.
And as far as the issues of "patches" go, yeah, it's annoying, but the quality of the game play more than makes up for it. There was a problem for a while with hackers and cheaters, but the patches fixed it. It was well worth any inconvienence. EA is to applauded, not scolded.
Never mind the politics, just buy it and have tons of gaming fun.
Amazing Game (don't listen to the haters)- its like you're in the middle of a hi-tech war February 16, 2008 xu 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I really don't understand the hate towards this game, this game is great. Let me put it this way, did you watch the movie 'Transformers' by Micheal Bay? Remember one of the first scenes where that Deceptacon (disguised as a US military helicopter) was totally destroying the military installation? This game sometimes feels like that because this game has nice powerful Mechs for you to play with and wreck havoc with.
I could go on and on about this game but I don't really have the time to write a detailed review.
But this game is amazing, especially if you have a computer that is up to snuff. I run it on high at 1280 x 800 (have edit the shortcut) with a 1.66ghz core 2 duo (minimum specs say '1.8ghz' but that's really only if you have a older, slower Pentium-4; the newer chip designs of Pentium-m or Core 2 Duo you should be able to run it fine with 1.6ghz or more), 2gb of ram (highly, highly recommended to run with 2gb's of ram, this game uses a lot of ram) and a Geforce 8600m GT (the most important component; make sure you have a good video card, integrated graphics are NOT going to cut it).
