A high-energy word puzzle game hosted by Lex the bookworm, Bookworm for DS/DSi challenges players use their vocabulary to create words from a play area of cascading individual letters. Time is of the essence though, as the play area contains red glowing letter tiles, that if unused will "burn down" the player's library if they reach the bottom of the screen, ending the game. The DS/DSi version of Bookworm contains the the same addictive action gamers have craved since the game appeared for PC, but also includes improvements like a wireless multiplayer mode and unlimited levels.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent DS adaptation!   December 12, 2009

I love Bookworm online, as well as the deluxe version for PC and Mac, so I was very excited to try it on my DS, since I can take it anywhere. I am thrilled with it! Everything you love about Bookworm is here, along with a few extra fun things.

Create words from the adjacent tiles to clear them from the board and earn points and books to put on shelves in your library. As you earn books and fill the shelves, you fill up and complete rooms in your library. Each room has a different theme and you get a little bonus when each is finished. As you complete more rooms, your library expands. You can visit the rooms on your map and see what you have accomplished!

My favorite new and challenging feature is collecting books and words. There are twenty books, each containing twelve words. When you create a word in one of the books, the book is unlocked and you can see the rest of the words needed to complete the book. For example, I unlocked the book "Insects" by making the word "ant". To complete the book I need to create "bee, wasp, roach, ladybug", etc. This is not as easy as it seems!! There are many fun collections to complete, and while I haven't finished a book yet, I imagine there will be a fun bonus when I do! Books are easily accessible from the main screen so you can check to see which books still needs words, and what words are needed.

My only teeny tiny complaint with this game is barely a blip on the radar, however I'm just a slight bit annoyed that when clearing tiles an extra tap is required after the word is finished. On the computer version, holding the mouse button while making words, and then just releasing it will clear the word. While holding the stylus to make the word on the DS, it has to be lifted and then tapped at the end of the word. Very picky, but it is what it is.

There is not a left-handed option on this game that I can find. That seems an obvious necessity, but for some reason was not included in this version.

Overall this game is fantastic, I am completely addicted!!

..and come out an hour later. How do I know when I really like a game? I sit down to play for 5-10 minutes and 60-90 minutes pass before I realize how long I've been at it. Bookworm is one of those games!

I wasn't familiar with the online version of this game, but I do like word games so it was an easy choice to get this one. I started playing it the day it arrived and it's a great game. So far I've stuck to playing the "Classic" version. It consists of a board filled with letters that you make words out of by connecting the tiles. Each time you make a word the letters disappear and you begin to fill up your bookshelves. As you advance to different levels, "fire" and "bonus" tiles will appear. The goal is not to let any of the "fire" tiles reach the bottom and burn your library up. (Which results in game over) Currently I'm at 30% finished and I've probably played 4-5 hours now, but there are still several other levels/versions to play so I'm not at all concerned that it's too easy of a game to finish.

I have had my Nintendo DS Lite for just about 9 months now and out of the 30 games I have this one ranks up there with my favorites: The Quest Trio and Touchmaster. Both are puzzle/strategy games that don't require much more than basic game skills to enjoy. It seems that this game is probably going to be popular with an "older" crowd and yes at 33 years old I'll happily put myself into that group.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT!!, CAN'T PUT IT DOWN!!!! LOVE IT!!!!   January 10, 2010

THIS IS A GREAT GAME. IT IS VERY ADDICTING AND FUN. I ACTUALLY LEARNED SOME NEW WORDS FROM PLAYING. IT IS REALLY NEAT, ALMOST LIKE A BOGGLE BUT THE LETTERS DISAPPEAR AS YOU USE THEM TO FORM WORDS AND THE OTHER LETTERS IN THE COLUMNS YOU USED MOVE DOWNWARD AS YOU FORM WORDS. SOME LETTERS THAT COME IN APPEAR ON FIRE, BUT AS LONG AS YOU GET RID OF THEM BY FORMING WORDS YOU WON'T BURN DOWN THE LIBRARY AND LOSE THE GAME. I WOULDN'T RECOMMEND THIS FOR YOUNG CHILDREN UNLESS THEY ARE TEENAGERS, I THINK ITS INTENDED MORE FOR ADULTS. I THINK ADULTS COULD APPRECIATE THIS GAME MORE. IT IS A GREAT GAME FOR THOSE WHO LOVE PUZZLES. THOSE ARE THE GAMES I USUALLY LOVE BUYING. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS ONE. I ALSO AM IN COMPETITION WITH MY HUSBAND WITH THIS GAME TO SEE HOW FAR WE BOTH COULD GET WITHOUT BURNING DOWN THE LIBRARY. GIVE IT A CHANCE, YOU WON'T BE SORRY.

5 out of 5 stars Like Boggle for the DS   December 22, 2009

Bookworm is very much like a game I used to play as a kid. We had hours of fun with that one with all the neighborhood kids when it was raining or snowing and we weren't able to go outside. This is another varation of the many word games on the market today. I love word games so Bookworm is right up my alley!

You hold the DS sideways. That's actually kind of a con for me as I find that doing this requires that I take the DS out of the case which is just too heavy to play a sideways game. I keep it in the case to protect it (play through case). I also find games where the DS is flipped to be harder on my wrists and hands so I can't play as long. Depending on how you look at it that could be a con (can't feed the addiction in long bursts!) or pro (my kids get something besides mac and cheese for dinner!)

I started playing in classic mode which is not timed. You just keep going until you lose. There really isn't any pressure in this mode. Its my favorite. The action mode can get intense as you try to get rid of the burning tiles before they hit the bottom. Because I play this game to relax I don't want to create too much stress for myself--I only play action when I'm tense since it lets me channel my energy.

As with many word games like Scrabble you will find yourself defaulting to the quick short words instead of looking for the longer words worth more. That's why classic mode is so nice since you aren't timed and can take your time (except for the burning tiles!). There is a handy little area where it keeps track of how many of each word you've created e.g. like 565 3 letter words, 456 4 letter words, and so on. I like that the little guy also tells you the meanings of words occasionally.

That's really all there is to this little title. It is simple but highly addicting. Those are the best kind of puzzle games as they can be shared with all family members and it doesn't take days to learn how to play them. I think this game would be a great fit for anyone who can spell at least 3 letter words. A homeschooling parent could use this to enhance curriculum and someone more my age (let's just say I'm on the other side of 40) can use it to keep his/her mind quick.

Bookworm also has multi and single card download play so for all you who like to play against other or with others you'll appreciate that! It is a great feature especially for kids in the car as you just need one cart to play.

Overall this gets a very enthusiastic thumbs up. At the under twenty price its a good deal for your DS library. It doesn't break the bank and it has many fun hours of exploring for you. Recommended!

I have enjoyed this game on the computer for a few years. Now with it on DS I will play more as I play much more on the DS these days. It has the same classic game that gives you time to look for words and also special words to get more points. Then it has the active mode where you have the burning tiles falling and you have to act fast.

You can play with multiplayers mode also. There are 18 library rooms and 20 bonus books in this DS edition.

This is a classic game than just about any casual gamer will enjoy. Good for keeping your brain young.
