Great for Backing Up Files July 13, 2008 Lisa Shea 23 out of 30 found this review helpful
Norton Ghost is in essence backup software for those who did not get an operating system that already has backup software on it. That being said, even though I'm running Vista Ultimate, I decided to give Ghost a try to see what it offered.
I actually like Ghost a great deal. I found the interface to be easy to set up, and the alerts that it is doing its duty each night is very reassuring. I haven't had any problems with getting the files back again.
Now I do have to say that I would NOT ever try to restore an entire operating system from old backup files. My home PC is running a number of large, complex software packages. If I had some sort of catastrophic hard drive failure, I would start from scratch, install those software packages fresh, and just get my data files from the backup. I imagine some small home users might enjoy the idea of restoring an entire system but for me it's just not reasonable. I have hardware level protection, but if the system really does hose, I'm starting from scratch to ensure everything goes on fresh and clean.
So if your aim is to have your entire computer including OS and programs backed up, I'd look more into hardware level (RAID etc) protection to give you the security you're seeking. I realize Ghost says it can do it - but there are so many variables and issues involved that it can't be fool-proof. I would really only use this (and any back up software) to back up data files that are changing. Organize your data files so that they are stored logically, then back them up nightly. You can always re-install Word - but you can't re-install your diary files and important correspondence.
Now, that being said, why go with Ghost rather than say Vista Ultimate? I happen to love Vista Ultimate and haven't had any issues with it at all. I love its functionality, and it's run super smoothly with all my software. But if you're someone who wants to run an OS without a built in back up, I would definitely go with this to supplement. You want backups. Somehow computers know when you are NOT backing up, and that is when they choose to crash. Don't subject yourself to that pain. Whatever you go with, make sure you are backing up your data files.
Easy to Install and Use April 15, 2008 drebbles (Arlington, MA USA) 20 out of 27 found this review helpful
System Requirements: Norton Ghost works with computers that have Vista or XP. You must have a 300 MHz or higher processor; 512MB of RAM; 400MB of available hard disk space; Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher; and a CD-ROM or DVD ROM Drive.
Installation: Norton Ghost is very easy to install. If you want, you can choose custom install, which has the following options:
1) User Interface
2) Backup Recovery Service
3) CD/DVD Support
4) Recovery Point Browser
5) Live Update
6) Change
Using it: It is very easy to use Norton Ghost. You have several options for backing up the computer. You can do a one time backup or you can set it to do backups at set times. Each time I turn on the computer, Norton Ghost asks me if I want to back up my computer. If I decide to do it, it backs up very quietly, with no interruption to what I'm working on. Once the back up is done, a check mark shows up on the Norton icon at the bottom of the computer screen to show it's done. If I decide not to back it up, that's not a problem.
You also have options as to where you want to back up your computer to. I use an external hard drive, but you can back up files to a CD or a web site.
Recovery: I created a custom Symantec Recovery Disk (SRD) and tested it and it worked fine.
Bottom Line: Norton Ghost is easy to use and install, although it takes a fair amount of memory and space. Having lost an entire hard drive on my last computer, which I was unable to recover, I will be using Norton Ghost for back up quite frequently.
Ghostly March 28, 2008 Santeria (Tallahassee) 8 out of 11 found this review helpful
This is probably Norton at its Ghostly best. With two major versions of GHOST available, the ENTERPRISE being the other significant one, this one is likely the Home or the lower cost end. For the purposes of this review, I am looking at an out of the box use.
GHOST installs easily easily, and requires only .NET 2 as any sort of technical prequisite. The system requirements need to be changed on the box, based on my experience, since 512 will not do it, and for all higher level functions ( Cross network Backup, and Rescue Disk Boot) the Software and Disc works with only 1 GIG or more. The Back up function is fast and easy. I am used to using Ghost explorer in ghost files, but in these backups, the ghost explorer function is in the file as is the recover button. And the annoying habit of creating multiple files in a
Backup is basically gone; in the large disk backups I did, I could get as high as 300 gig without any problem at all. I also tried cross network backups at my home network, and whilst it started, found the destination, and started to write, it failed for reasons un-related to the GHOST software ( My Security software stopped the event).
The rescue Boot Disk is superb. In its out of the box form, it behaves like ACTIVE DISK and Boots to a series of Menus which include NETWORK, with networking services, PC Anywhere Thin Host, Ping a Network Computer, and UTILITIES which include a MBR repair tool, as well as a series of very good Partition Table Operations and repair kits.
All of these are the basic elements, and can be just about infinitely configurable; the key issue is that you DO need One Gig of Memory.
Simple Intuitive Interface April 7, 2008 R. Lanthier (Vienna, VA United States) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I have never used Ghost before. Prior to this, I have used an older version of Acronis True Image. While True Image is a more feature-rich piece of software, Ghost is super simple and easy to deploy. Easy to manage backups, intuitive simple interface, highly recommended! I do, however, find that the backups are very slow, even on my fast system. However, they run nicely in the background and do not slow the system down.
best way to upgrade to a larger main disk and backup as well March 23, 2009 Elvis (Denver, Colorado, USA) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is one of the few software apps available that can backup your system AND help you upgrade to a bigger internal hard drive.
Usually when attempting to swap out your entire main hard drive (C: drive with the operating system on it) you can only upgrade to an identical size partition, so what is the point?!. Norton Ghost lets you back up your current main C; drive on a separate disk, even a USB drive!, swap out your main drive to a higher performance and bigger drive, and then load your "backup" to the newly installed hard drive. Norton at this point lets you select if you want to make the new partition use the full new drive size, then it works flawlessly to do what it says. I updated an old laptop with a 32gb drive to a 250gb 5400rpm (PATA) drive and my performance improved 6 fold. Highly recommended. Oh yes, the incremental backups are fast too after you capture the first disk image.
